The prospect of managing your finances at university can seem daunting but the University of Leeds offers a comprehensive range of bursaries and scholarships, together with financial advice, to support you throughout your studies. Some schemes provide support on the basis of academic achievements while others offer support to students based on financial need or personal circumstance. University wide Scholarships include;

Leeds Scholarships
Scholarships are available for UK undergraduate students with household incomes of £42,620 a year or less*. The deadline for these scholarships is usually in the April prior to you attending University so to find out if you’re eligible, and for details about how to apply, visit our scholarships pages.

Here in the School of Physics and Astronomy we offer a number of different scholarships to help our students through their degrees.

Dean's Excellence Scholarship

The Dean’s Excellence Scholarship of £1000 per year of study will be awarded to UK and EU undergraduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their studies.

Qualification Criteria
To be awarded a scholarship you need to meet the following conditions:

  • Achieve GCE A-levels Grades A*A*A, including Physics and Mathematics. Other equivalent qualifications will also be considered.
  • Commence a single honours programme of study in the School of Physics and Astronomy in September of the year of entry and be fully registered as a student on the 1st December in the same year.
  • Be a student paying tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.


You do not need to apply separately for this scholarship, you will qualify automatically for the award if you meet the criteria shown above. The scholarship will be paid in the January of each year of study. Payment after the first year will be paid on condition of you achieving a minimum 70% average mark over 120 credits (to include all compulsory modules) in the previous year of study.

International Scholarships

Science and Engineering Scholarships
A scholarship for self-funded students, paying fees at the International rate, entering year one, on any of the following degree courses;

BSc Physics
MPhys, BSc Physics
BSc Physics with Astrophysics
MPhys, BSc Physics with Astrophysics
BSc Theoretical Physics
MPhys, BSc Theoretical Physics
MNatSc Natural Sciences

The University will pay £2000 of your tuition fees for each year you are registered and studying on the course, subject to meeting the required conditions, to a maximum value of £8000.

This will take the form of a fee reduction not a cash award.

There is no separate application process for this scholarship however you will need to confirm that you meet the stated criteria before you are able to receive the £2000 reduction on your fees.
