Alternative entry requirements

We welcome applications from students with a wide range of international qualifications and the University provides excellent international support.

English Language Qualifications
As part of the matriculation requirements of the University you will need to provide us with evidence of an approved English language qualification. Typical examples include:

  • GCSE English grade C or better,
  • IGCSE English grade C or better,
  • IELTS grade 6.0 overall, with at least 5.5 in each of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

English language requirements for some Joint Honours degrees may be higher.

International Baccalaureate
Our typical offer is:

MPhys programmes: 35 with at least 6 in both Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level and 4 in English at standard level.

BSc programmes: 35 with at least 5 in both Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level and 4 in English at Standard Level.

European Union qualifications
We endeavour to make offers that are comparable to our standard offer. Typical offers for our single honours degree programmes are as follows. This is based on our past experience, and not necessarily kept up to date - your offer may be different.

  • Irish Highers
    AAAAB at higher level including A1 in Mathematics and A in Applied Mathematics, plus a minimum grade C in higher level English.

  • Austrian Matura
    Pass Matura with an overall score of 1.8 including 1 in Mathematics and 3 in English, with no component graded at 3 or lower.

  • Cyprus Apolytirion
    19 overall, with 20 in Mathematics
    or 19 overall plus Grade A in A-level Mathematics (or Pure Mathematics)
    or 18 overall plus Grades AA in A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics
    PLUS at least 17 in Apolytirion English, or an English language qualification as above.

  • Cyprus Lise Bitirme Devlet Diplomasi
    9/10 Overall, plus Grade A in A-level Mathematics
    PLUS an English language qualification as above.

  • European Baccalaureate
    An average of 80 per cent overall, with at least 8.5 in Mathematics (5 periods), 8 in Advanced Mathematics and 6 in English.

  • French Baccalaureate
    A score of 13 overall, with at least 15 in Mathematics and at least 10 in English.

  • German Abitur
    An overall score of 1.5 or better, with at least 13 in Mathematics and at least 10 in English.

  • Iceland Studentsprof
    7 overall with at least 9 in Mathematics,
    PLUS an English language qualification as above.

  • Lithuanian Brandos Atestatas
    8 overall with 10 in Mathematics, and 75 per cent or better on two state exams, including Mathematics.
    PLUS an English language qualification as above.

  • Polish Matura
    80 per cent overall with at least 85 in Mathematics at Extended Level,
    PLUS an English language qualification as above. A grade of 70 in English at Extended Level may also be sufficient.

  • Portugese Diploma de Ensino Secundario
    14 overall with at least 85 in Mathematics,
    PLUS an English language qualification as above.

  • Romanian Bacalaureat
    8 overall with at least 9.5 in Mathematics,
    PLUS an English language qualification as above.


International (non-EU) Qualifications
We endeavour to make offers that are comparable to our standard offer. Typical offers are as follows. This is based on our past experience, and not necessarily kept up to date - your offer may be different.

  • CBSE Class 12 All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) or CISCE Class 12 Indian School Certificate (ISC)
    80 per cent overall with at least 85 in Mathematics and 70 in English.

  • US SAT and AP
    At least 650 in SATR Math and 550 in both Writing and Critical Reading
    PLUS grades 5,5,4 in three Group A Advanced Placement tests (or suitable equivalent), including grade 5 in Calculus BC. (For the list of Group A subjects, see the UCAS website.)

  • South African national senior certificate
    Pass in five higher grade subjects including English,
    PLUS grades AAA in three higher grade subjects including Mathematics.
